Phil joined Night Train Swimmers in 2010 and was instantly one of the toughest cold-water swimmers on the team. He was the first swimmer in the initial Farallones relay attempt, and joined every successive attempt. He completed the Catalina Channel two-person relay with Vito Bialla in 2012 as well.

In addition to swimming, Phil is co-founder and brewmaster at Headlands Brewing Co. (with Night Train Swimmer Patrick Horn).  He is a transplant from Southern California and now resides at the base of Mount Tamalpias in Mill Valley with his wife Gretchen. In a former life, Phil was a professional baseball player before having Tommy John surgery and picking up swimming as part of his physical therapy.
